Rosacea is a long-standing inflammatory disease that produces redness on the cheeks and T-zone. It affects 10% of the population and is particularly prevalent in caucasians. Although men usually suffer from serious forms, it often appears in women between 20 and 50 years of age. The cause is not well known but it is presumed to be related to pilosebaceous disorders, increased vascular dilatation and immunological impairment. Alcohol consumption, irritating cosmetic products, emotional stress, heat, sun, and anxiety can also trigger this condition.

Rosacea is separated into four sub-types depending on how it shows up:
- Erythematous-telangiectatic rosacea: flushing, erythema, and signs of small blood vessels.
- Papulo-pustular rosacea: classic form commonly seen in middle-aged women.
- Phymatous rosacea: thickening of the skin, with irregular appearance - signs can appear on the nose, eyelids, chin, and forehead.
- Ocular rosacea: ocular discomfort similar to a foreign object, gritty sensation, light hypersensitivity, irritation and redness.
Other types of facial issue resulting in red skin include: thread veins on the face, broken capillaries on the face, facial flushing, broken capillaries, cherry angioma and red marks on the skin caused by breakouts (post inflammatory erythema).
