What does having anti-wrinkle injections involve?

  • Anti-wrinkle injectable is a doctor-only treatment. Your first step will be to book a complimentary consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic doctors.
  • You will either be booking in for a anti-wrinkle injectable London treatment or Essex treatment at our respective clinics.
  • On the day of your consultation, your doctor will explain the treatment and advise if it is suitable for you. They will also recommend other treatments that you may benefit from. For example, if your lines are very deep and will not be removed by anti-wrinkle injectables alone, you may benefit from dermapen or i-pixel as this would decrease the wrinkle depth. If you have lines on your lower face, you may benefit from dermal filler as anti-wrinkle injectable cannot remove lines on the lower face.
  • Your doctor will also be able to recommend which skin care products will work best to enhance your anti-wrinkle injection result.
  • Providing there are no contraindications, and after the consultation, you wish to go ahead, you will be able to have your treatment on the same day, or if you prefer, you can re-book and come back another time to have the treatment.
  • If you wish to go ahead, consent will be taken, and pre-treatment photography will be accepted. Photography is strictly confidential and is used for medico-legal reasons so that we may compare the photograph to one which will be taken at your follow-up appointment. This will enable us to assess how you respond to anti-wrinkle injectables, which will help us establish the correct dose for you.
  • The treatment is not very painful as the needles we use are very fine, so we don't routinely numb clients; however, numbing cream can be applied for 10-15 minutes if you would like. Please request this either at reception on arrival at the clinic or when you enter the room for your consultation.
  • You will have a series of injections into the area you are having treated; the injection time is very quick and takes only around 5 minutes. Our doctors are highly experienced and perform this treatment tens of times per day to perform it quickly and effectively to reduce your discomfort.
  • Immediately after, there will be small marks / tiny lumps on the face where the product has been injected; they will go down after around 10 minutes.
  • We will be able to apply a cover-up to the area, which is approved and will not cause infection, but you should not apply any of your products (including makeup) over the area treated for at least 6 hours.
  • Your aftercare advice will be given – do not apply any makeup to the site for 6 hours, avoid exercise for 24 hours and avoid any blood thinners, including alcohol, for 24 hours.
  • If this is your first time having treatment with us, you will be booked for a follow-up appointment in 2 weeks, where your treatment can be topped-up free of charge if required, or any adjustments (drop brow or raise a brow, for example) can be made.

More about anti-wrinkle and muscle relaxing injections

Covid vaccinations notice / disclaimer

SARS –COV-2 (Covid –19 infection), as well as the Covid –19 vaccinations, are both highly challenging to our immune system by over-stimulating its response. Therefore both (Covid-19 infection, as well as the vaccine) can lead to complications after injection. Nodules and local reactions can occur within weeks, months, or even years after the treatment when our immune system is challenged.

So far generally there is a low incidence of such cases reported. Your safety is paramount to us and therefore we are advising you the following:

Do not have dermal filler, Profhilo, or muscle relaxing injections 2 weeks before your planned vaccination or 3 weeks after.
If you have been infected with Covid-19, do not have dermal filler, Profhilo, or muscle relaxing injections for the first 3 weeks of being symptom-free.

If you develop any symptoms after the treatments, please contact our Clinics immediately. Our doctors will advise you further. As medical practitioners, our doctors can prescribe the necessary medication if required.

Do these injections hurt?

The procedure is done using a very fine needle, so it feels more like acupuncture than very painful, and most clients do not need numbing cream. If, however, you are needle-phobic or have any anxiety around pain, then numbing cream can be applied - if you would like this, please request this either at reception on arrival at the clinic so you can be numbed while waiting to see the doctor.

Are muscle relaxing injections safe?

This form of toxin is regarded as being safe and has been used to treat tens of millions of patients worldwide over the past two decades. This treatment is consistently the most popular cosmetic treatment performed globally with 7.7 million treatments performed in the US alone in 2019. It is recognised as a medicine and is used widely in the NHS to treat medical issues in a much higher doses than we use it for cosmetically and as it is not a new treatment, we have long-term data on its safety profile. At Dr Leah clinics safety is our priority and we minimise any potential risk by ensuring we use the premium muscle relaxing injections available - we use Allergan and ensure all our muscle relaxing injection treatments are performed by our in clinic doctors / dentists (GMC/ GDC Registered) who have extensive clinical training and each has a minimum of 4 years experience and perform thousands of muscle relaxing injections treatments per year.

Who cannot have muscle relaxing injections?

You should not have this treatment if:

• The injection site is infected.

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients.

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

• You have a neuromuscular disorder (e.g. myasthenia gravis).

A full list of side effects, cautions, and contraindications will be discussed during your face-to-face consultation.

What is the aftercare?

You can carry on with your day as usual. However, we recommend the following:

• No makeup except that applied by your doctor on the day of treatment

• No exercise on the day of treatment (the next morning is fine)

• Stay awake and avoid laying down for 4-6 hours after treatment (if possible)

• Avoid saunas and hot baths on day of treatment

• Do not consume any alcohol or anti-inflammatory pain medication (NSAIDS or aspirin) before or after (on day) of your treatment; this is related to your increased risk of bruising

• If you are prone to bruising then please commence arnica tablets, 5 per day for 3 days before your treatment

• No other facial treatments in the same area as you have had muscle relaxing injections for two weeks after treatment e.g. facials, dermapen, laser (however it is fine to have dermal filler on same day as muscle relaxing injections as often they are done in the same consultation)

What areas can benefit from anti-wrinkle injections?

Muscle relaxing injections injections are most effective when used to reduce signs of ageing in the following places:
• Forehead
• Brow
• Crow's feet

However, they can be effective in other areas. Dr Leah Clinics are also able to use muscle relaxing injections to:

• Brow lift – to lift eyebrows to help brows look less heavy

• Forehead – to smooth lines across the forehead area

• Frown lines – to smooth lines between eyes

• Crow's feet – to smooth fine lines either side of the eye corners

• Migraines – to reduce jaw clenching and resulting migraines

• Masseter – to slim bulky jaw

• Gummy smile – to reduce a gummy smile

• Brow asymmetry – to even eyebrow alignment

• Bell's palsy treatment – to help correct facial asymmetry caused by Bell’s palsy (Dr Leah only)

• Neck lines – One of the best methods for those questioning how to get rid of neck lines. This treatment helps to smooth platysmal bands on the neck (Nefertiti lift)

• Bunny lines – Bu–to help treat downturned mouth corners

• Orange-peel skin - to smooth dimples on the chin area

• Teeth grinding (bruxism) – for those looking for how to stop teeth grinding this is the perfect treatment.

• Nose – prevent nasal flaring and nose dipping

• Excessive sweating underarms

What are the side effects of treatment?

Most side effects are short-lived and mild, the most common being mild bruising to the injection site. Some patients also report mild headaches shortly after the treatment, but these usually subside within 24 hours.
